Workforce Initiative for a Sustainable Environment

The WISE Scholarship Program at Kent State University is available for students currently enrolled in an approved sustainability course and who exhibit financial need.  Students who wish to pursue advanced training in sustainable polymer science and environmentally responsible materials innovation, will be given substantial consideration. 

Tuition assistance: The WISE Program provides up to $3,000 in financial assistance to students enrolled in polymer sustainability related coursework.

To be considered for participation, applicants must be enrolled as an undergraduate/graduate student in one of the qualified courses below:

• ENGR 27210 Introduction to Sustainability
• ENGR 61095 Sustainable Energy Systems
• ENGR 81095 Sustainable Energy Systems
• FDM 10043 Sustainable Fashion Thinking.

Lifecycle Assessment Courses (non-credit)

All courses are delivered on-line in an asynchronous format for maximum flexibility with participant schedules. Offered through the University of Akron UAx Extended Campus in collaboration with Kent State University.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) evaluates the environmental impacts of products across their entire life cycle, from raw material extraction to end-of-life. Sustainability, including the circular economy and product life cycle management, are top technical challenges and priorities for many companies and sectors, which has increased demand for professionals with sustainability expertise.

These non-credit courses were developed in collaboration with industry and targeted to technical professionals and students with upper college level mathematical and engineering or scientific background who want to gain knowledge needed to understand environmental impacts, navigate changing environmental requirements, and support corporate sustainability goals.

Organizations across the supply chain can benefit from LCA expertise: from large companies that outsource their LCA and want in-house knowledge; small to medium companies with a few in-house professionals interested in additional training; growing businesses seeking practical sustainability training; or suppliers responding to increasing requests for product lifecycle data. This series of courses prepares professionals to meet evolving market demands.

The Kent State Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program is an incredibly successful experiential learning opportunity for students. The KSU WISE project will provide four students a fellowship each summer to conduct research specifically in polymer sustainability.  

Qualifying students should come from Aeronautics and Engineering and Chemistry and Biochemistry, although no limitations will be put on discipline. Further, cross-disciplinary experiences (a chemistry student working with a faculty member from Aeronautics and Engineering) will be prioritized. Click here for more information and to apply
