The Purpose of I AM FIRST
I AM FIRST is Kent State University’s system-wide effort to recognize and celebrate first-generation students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The purpose of this initiative is to increase the awareness of and engagement with first-generation students, faculty, staff, and alumni and to promote the resources, programs, and services dedicated to first-generation student success.

Did you know that 4 in 10 Kent State students are first-generation? A first-generation student is one whose parents or guardians have not completed a four-year bachelor’s degree.

Throughout I AM FIRST week, we will have a number of programs celebrating students who will be the first in their family to earn a bachelor's degree. In addition to recognizing first-generation students, we will celebrate staff, faculty, and advocates for their accomplishments and support of the First-generation student journey.

First-Gen Scholarship Fund
Kent State University’s First-Generation Student Support Fund scholarship helps reduce financial barriers that may hinder first-generation students from becoming the first in their family to obtain a bachelor’s degree.
