Position Title: Resident Assistant (RA)
Department/Unit: University Housing/Residence Life
Supervisor Title: Residence Hall Director/Assistant Residence Hall Director
CED Pay Level: Highly Specialized
Compensation: Provided in the form of room waiver, stipend, and a meal plan.

Important note on RA room placements:

Each residence hall has designated 'staff' rooms strategically placed on the floor to support the needs of the community. RAs are typically assigned to a single room with a community bath. RA housing accommodations requests and supporting documentation (ADA and religion/sincerely held beliefs) are reviewed and determined by the Office of Equal Opportunity and Compliance.

Position Overview:

The Resident Assistant (RA) position lives on an assigned residence hall floor to create communities by creating engagement opportunities for residents. They work to form individual relationships with all residents. They serve on duty and complete round(s) to help support safe, respectful, and academically conducive environments. The RA position serves for the academic year, both fall and spring semester, or duration of. The RA position is a 20-hour-a-week position. RAs are not guaranteed for rehire each year; performance from the prior year, eligibility, and department need will determine whether they are rehired.

Minimum Qualifications
  • GPA Requirement - At least a 2.50 current and cumulative GPA for undergraduate students and a 3.00 current and cumulative GPA for graduate students at the time of application and throughout the employment period.
  • Not on sanction by the Office of Student Conduct and able to pass a background check.
  • 18 years or older by July 1 for fall employment or by Jan. 1 for spring employment; registered student at Kent State University.
  • Abide by the hourly work week limit of 28 hours maximum per week in all on-campus jobs combined. For international students, this number is 20 hours per week when classes are in-session, and 28 hours per week during summer and winter break periods.
  • Abide by all policies and procedures outlined by University Housing, the Division of Student Life, and Kent State University as well as all federal, state and local laws.
  • Earned at least 30 credit hours.
  • Complete or be in the process of completing the P.E.E.R. Success Academy.
  • Must be able to reside on the assigned residence hall floor for the entire academic year.
  • Minimum on-campus residency of one academic semester at Kent State University, which may include the current semester. Alternatively, minimum on-campus residency of one semester or quarter at another college or university.
  • This position has the duration of a full academic year (Fall and Spring semesters). Accordingly, those who will graduate mid-year, study abroad, or engage in another opportunity that prevents them from fulfilling a full year of employment must inform University Housing before accepting the position.
Other Requirements and Expectations
  • Trainings/Meetings - Attend and complete all required training as determined by supervisors and University Housing. Attend all scheduled meetings as determined by supervisors, including (but not limited to) team meetings, 1-1s, in-services, community service events, floor meetings.
  • Communication - Adhere to communication deadlines and expectations set forth by your direct supervisor or other professional staff members, including answering emails, text messages, and phone calls in a timely manner.
  • Work Flexibility - Ability to work a flexible schedule, including non-traditional work hours, and practice good time management skills.
  • Workstation - Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workstation and environment for students, guests, employees, and all others.
  • Customer Service - Must demonstrate excellent customer service skills to students, guests, employees, and all others. Promote positive public relations for Kent State University and University Housing.
  • Collaboration - Work collaboratively with others to achieve the Division of Student Life, Kent State University, and the department's mission and values.
  • Experience handling sensitive and/or confidential information and follow FERPA and University guidelines.
  • Foster a community that promotes a sense of belonging, academic success, and support.
  • Maintain visibility and accessibility in your community.
  • Adhere to the dress code of the department/office.
  • Assist with other departmental tasks as needed.
  • Physicality - Light work exerting up to 30 pounds of force occasionally.
