Biography

Dr. Schell is a licensed clinical psychologist and the Director of CAPS.   He first became interested in college mental health while completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University.  He is highly experienced as a clinician and administrator, having spent more than 25 years at Kent State University focusing on mental health and higher education. In addition to providing clinical services and offering leadership to the department, he has overseen psychological testing and assessment, developed and expanded the clinical training program, helped to establish psychiatric services on campus, developed a substance use treatment program and a Collegiate Recovery Community, and led numerous outreach programs and initiatives. 

Beyond his role with CAPS, Dr. Schell is also a part-time Adjunct Professor on the graduate faculty in the Department of Psychological Sciences, has taught both graduate and undergraduate courses, and is part of a local group practice in a neighboring community.

Dr. John Schell is the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and leads an experienced team of dedicated mental health professionals who provide high quality, personalized care to Kent State University students and consultation to the university community.

When he’s not working, Dr. Schell loves spending time with his wife and kids, and enjoys travel, photography, board games, and watching soccer.
