Dr. Kristine Pytash

Kristine E. Pytash is a Professor in Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Studies at College of Education and Human Services (EHS), Kent State University, where she directs the Secondary Integrated Language Arts Teacher Preparation program. She is a former high school English teacher. Her research focuses on the literacy practices of youth in juvenile detention facilities. In addition, she studies disciplinary writing and how to prepare teachers to teach writing. An underlying theme across all her lines of inquiry is how technology significantly influences young adults’ literacy practices and their literacy instruction. Kristine is a regular contributor to the International Literacy Association’s TILE-SIG blog. She recently published Writing from the Margins: Exploring the Writing Practices of Youth in the Juvenile Justice System and her programing Designing Identities (with colleague Dr. Lisa Testa) won the Directors Award for Programming in Juvenile Detention Centers from Ohio’s Department of Youth Services. In addition, she was the 2017 recipient of the Rewey Belle Inglis Award for Outstanding Service Relating to the Role and Image of Women in English Education sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English Gender and Literacy Assembly.
