Mathematics Education

The Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Early Childhood Education (ECED) prepares future teachers to teach students from preschool through grade 5. The program was the first undergraduate teacher education program in the world to offer International Baccalaureate certification, and includes over 500 field hours with children.

Students enrolled in ECED mathematics education courses are provided experiences in the university classroom and field that enhance their understanding of children’s mathematical thinking at various stages of development and appropriate pedagogies to facilitate engagement in more sophisticated mathematical thinking in these stages.

The Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Middle Childhood Education (MCED) prepares future teachers to teach students in grades 4 to 9.

Students enrolled in MCED mathematics education courses are provided experiences in the university classroom and field that enhance their understanding of students’ mathematical thinking in the pre-adolescent years and appropriate pedagogies to facilitate engagement in more sophisticated mathematical thinking during this pivotal age.

The Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Integrated Mathematics (ADED) prepares future teachers to teach mathematics in grades 7 to 12.

There are six (6) required hours of mathematics education courses in the ADED program, and an additional three (3) hours field practicum course.

Students enrolled in the Integrated Mathematics degree program are provided experiences in the university classroom and field that enhance their understanding of students’ mathematical thinking throughout the adolescent years and appropriate pedagogies to facilitate engagement in more sophisticated mathematical thinking during this time frame.

The MAT program is a graduate-level program that prepares bachelor’s degree holders who were not education majors an opportunity to become teachers at either the Early Childhood (preK-5) or Adolescent/Young Adult (grades 7-12) level.

The Early Childhood MAT program (grades preK-5) is for individuals who already hold a bachelor's degree in another subject area and who are interested in becoming certified to teach Preschool through Grade 5 in the state of Ohio. There are three (3) hours of required mathematics pedagogy coursework with this program.

The Secondary Education MAT program (grades 7-12) includes six (6) hours of required mathematics pedagogy coursework.

The Master of Education degree is offered through the Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Studies program.

The program requires a minimum of 30 graduate credit hours to complete. The M.Ed. provides a series of opportunities to improve one’s understanding of research and theory on mathematics education as it applies to the teaching and learning of mathematics.

Kent State offers a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Studies (TLCS). The TLCS Ph.D. program is a research-intensive program that prepares students for research and teaching as applied to various educational contexts. STEM Education is one of the focus areas available within the TLCS Ph.D.

Those enrolled and accepted into the mathematics education doctoral program are expected to have a strong background in mathematics. Depending on a student's professional focus and course background, they may be advised to include courses from the mathematics department in their plan of study.
