Biography

Dr. Ali Barikroo earned his bachelor’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the Isfahan University of Medical Sciences (IUMS) in Isfahan, Iran in 2004. He went on to earn his Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Social Welfare & Rehabilitation Sciences (USWR) in Tehran, Iran in 2007.  After finishing his Master's degree, he became a researcher, active clinician, lecturer, and clinical supervisor in various clinical and educational settings in Iran. Then, in 2012, he began his Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Florida - Gainesville. He completed his doctoral work with a primary research and teaching focus revolving around dysphagia in 2017.

During Dr. Barikroo's doctoral training, he had the opportunity to get involved as a research assistant on various cutting-edge research projects in the area of swallowing. This lead him to develop a doctoral dissertation focusing on optimizing the existing electrical stimulation protocol for dysphagia rehabilitation. Therefore, his primary research interests are to understand the effect of Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation on different aspects of swallowing in order to improve the effectiveness of this treatment approach.

Lastly, because of Dr. Barikroo's research interests and expertise in as Speech Anatomy and Physiology, Neuroplasticity and Rehabilitation, and Neurological Bases of Communication, he was welcomed by the KSU program as an Assistant professor in the Fall of 2017.

Dr. Barikroo's SPARR lab (Swallowing Physiology and Research Rehabilitation lab) was created in 2017. The primary mission of the SPARR lab is to investigate the effects of novel treatment modalities on physiological and clinical aspects of swallowing, but with an added interest in evaluating the effects of aging on different aspects of swallowing function. If you are interested in learning more about Dr. Barikroo's research or to get involved as a research assistant, please visit the Swallowing Physiology and Rehabilitation Research Laboratory (SPARR lab), visit the lab (CPA A145) in the Speech and Hearing clinic, email (sparrlaboratory@gmail.com) or call (330-672-2474).
